Persistence and patience. Having both of these qualities when you begin your canine training is very important. The language barriers are very difficult to overcome when dealing with another species such as cats and dogs. I am going to explain how and what has worked in a real life situations with me and my dog Sam. Sam is 2yrs old. I have been caring for him for 1yr. His previous owners were neglect to the needs of a dog. Finances are just one aspect one needs to consider when taking on another mouth to feed.

You will need some tools for the job,[1] Attain a sturdy retractable leash type mechanism (the longer the better), [2] Your pets favorite Treat(important),[3] a whistle if you decide to make this your dogs stop signal. Keep in mind this is a basic outline on how to control your pet in an urban environment. Walking an excited young dog around people and other animals can be tricky, Barking, pulling on the leash nearing ripping your arm out of the socket and making it very uncomfortable as well as Dangerous for you, others and your pet.

[1] SITTING STILL

In the comfort of your home encourage your dog to sit by calling their name or using the command of your choice i.e. “Sam come”. Keeping your phrases short, loud and clear. If your dog comes immediately reward him with a treat and affections. While showing your affection to him in the rewarding process gently put your hand on the rear top section of your dogs body. With some force,(not much is needed) encourage your pets body into a sitting position. He already knows how to sit.

We are asking him to sit now, when commanded. While pushing him into the sitting position verbally say aloud “sit” motioning your dogs body into the sitting position. Take away your hand and if he remains seated position point say the “sit” command and reward him with a treat. You may have to repeat this process often but stick with it and always be affectionate and caring whilst speaking loud and firm. Keeping his attention by maintaining eye contact. Don’t be afraid to show your feelings with your facial expressions raised eyebrows, smiling etc.

[2] Walking in an Urban Environment

Before you begin walking around the city you must have absolute control of your dog. Safety of yourself and Others in public is very important. In step one you learn a bit about control and command by rewarding and giving physical affections. In the city there are parks that allow you to walk your dog as long as
